Girls' Night Out!
Wow -- two Girls' Nights in a row!! Last night I had a girls' night with some interpreter friends at Yogurtland, and tonight our primary presidency and chorister went out to eat at Texas
Roadhouse for a final get-together before we are released. I couldn't have asked for a better presidency and music leader. I feel so grateful and honored to have been able to rub shoulders with such amazing ladies. We have become such dear friends and I hope that we can still stay close as friends even though we won't be working together in primary any more. I couldn't have asked for a better presidency!
Meanwhile Janelle tended all of the kids at our house, plus a few extra
neighbor kids -- and this isn't even all of them -- Jenna and Clarissa must have missed the photo opp. It worked out perfectly because she needed to do two
hours of service for her Geography class with Mrs. Taylor and then write
a paper about it. So she was happy to baby-sit while we went out (and while the Dads went to the Priesthood Session)!!

Josh Chinese Solo
Josh sang a solo in
Chinese for his school assembly today. The art troupe from Sichuan
University, China, partner of Confucius Institute at the University of
Utah, came to perform traditional Chinese music and dances tonight at
Snow Canyon High School tonight and also performed at Josh's school for their assembly today.
Josh's Chinese teacher had asked him to sing a solo in Chinese for it. So Rick (who was sick today and stayed home from work) and I went to watch. Josh did a great job, but he had practiced with background music track and today he was performing with a Chinese woman who was playing a Chinese instrument and so it was a little different. Partway through the song she stopped playing and started clapping along and I think that threw him off a little. But other than that it went great!

Caroler Retreat!
We had our Caroler retreat at a ward member's house. It was SO nice of them to open up their home and yard for us! The kids went swimming and hot-tubbing and had
dinner (sloppy joes) that was brought in by one of the parents.
Kaye Bear came as the guest speaker to teach acting tips. Rick then had the kids play games on the grass and then split them up in groups to perform a nursery rhyme using creative accents and actions. They did a great job and they were quite entertaining. Then he assigned bells and had the kids mark their music. Jenna was getting really tired and so I brought her home early.
We have a small group this year -- only ten people -- but they sound awesome!!

Parent Teacher Conferences
Wednesday 27: I started getting sick -- AGAIN!!!!! This is the third time I have gotten sick since school started six weeks ago! I don't know what is wrong with my immune system! Rick and Jenna started coming down with a cold today too.
Janelle and Jaiden were excited that they both made it into National Junior Honor Society. They had their first meeting yesterday. I attended Josh's Parent Teacher Conferences today. He received raving reviews! Josh's Chinese teacher lit up when I told him who my son was and said that Josh was his top student. He explained how each morning he had a big chair up front and asked the class who wanted to share some good news. They would share in Chinese and then the kids would ask them questions. He said that Josh always raised his hand for this. I thought it was funny because we can't get Josh to speak Chinese at all for us at home. When the sister missionaries came over and one was from China, I had to totally bribe Josh to get him to actually have a conversation with her in Chinese!
The girls went to the new Family History Center for Young Women's. They went on and on about how cool it was. They did a bunch of stuff there that was supposed to be e-mailed to them, but the e-mail they had used to set up their accounts years ago were old ones and even though Rick was able to get access it, they never received any of the pictures they had taken or other information they that had worked on and so they were disappointed. I said that we could back for a family night some time.
Thursday 28: I left at 7:20 this morning since I had an early interpreting job. Rick ended up coming home early and calling in sick for tomorrow.
We finally got our hard drive back. Several years ago I had brought one of our external hard drives in to a local computer shop because it wasn't working. They said that it was completely corrupted and that they couldn't fix it, but that they could refer us to a specialty company in Salt Lake who might be able to retrieve the data but that it would be expensive. We took the hard drive home but didn't make any decisions. Finally Rick looked into various options and finally found a place.
We sent it in and they said they felt like they could recover the data but that it would take some time and cost $1000.00. Some of the other places were $4000.00 or more!! We debated doing it, but knew that there were years of pictures and videos on it that we didn't want to lose. It took them several months, and we finally got it back today. They were able to recover 99% of the contents. The pictures look great, but some of the videos have some pix-elation here and there due to the damage of the hard-drive, but overall we are happy with the results. The lesson here is always back up your computer and hard-drives -- or find safe storage online.
We found an interview we had done with my Grandma and Grandpa Norman back in 1997 on the hard drive. We had searched for it among all of our other hard-drives the past few years and could never find it and so we suspected it was on this one. It is priceless!

Primary Ice-Cream Party!!
Monday 25: Today was an early out day and we had our primary ice-cream
party at Julie's house. It was a lot of fun! I am getting released soon and will really miss these kids and awesome leaders!! Josh quickly ate his
ice-cream and then took off with friends before going to his scout
activity learning how to follow a compass course.

Swiss Days 5K and Parade!
This morning was the Swiss Days' 5K with Jared and Josh representing our family. When Jenna learned that I hadn't signed her up she threw an outrageous temper tantrum, screaming and crying. She is such a drama queen! She had expressed an interest weeks ago, but I guess I didn't really take her seriously. She has never done much running and I Rick or I would probably have to sign up with her. Maybe next year.
Our neighbors, the Phillips, always have a big cheering section with music blaring and tables filled with water bottles for any runners who want some! Josh beat his time by last year even though he hasn't done much of any running this past year. Jared was a little slower than last year. Rick fixed a big breakfast of pancakes and eggs and then the kids all went to the Swiss Days' activities all day long.
The kids got plenty of candy at the parade and so they were happy. Rick got a nice nap...so he was happy too.

Swiss Days -- Pioneer Activities
Today we had our practice for the primary program at the church and then walked right outside to the Swiss Days pioneer activities! Josh was helping with his scout troop at the cow milking activity where kids "milk" cows from rubber gloves filled with milk. The kids also branded a block of wood and nailed holes into the lid of a jar and dipped candles and rode on a little train and participated in other fun activities -- and they were all free!
Tonight Rick and I had a quiet house because all of the kids were running around at the Swiss Days' activities with their friends. So we decided to watch the movie Wonder Woman. The kids came home partway through and Rick said that they were interrupting our "date" and had to leave. We eventually switched to our room and let the kids watch their own movie.

Glockenspiel
Tonight we all went to Jaiden's dance fund-raiser, which was a BBQ at the spinny park.
Then I found out that it was also the unveiling of the glockenspiel clock in the tower in the Santa Clara Town Hall tonight! I wish I had known about it so that we could have gone!

I had never heard of a glockenspiel clock and had no idea that Santa Clara was getting one! It has life-sized swiss figurines that turn around as music plays. It will go off every hour on the hour and can easily be heard by our home. It is really pretty neat!
