Jenna: SCMS Awards Night

Jenna had her awards night for Snow Canyon Middle School tonight. I told her that I wanted her to go, especially since she had to miss it last year due to dance. All of the teachers get to choose one student for the 8th grade and one student for the 9th grade for an award in their field of study. Last year I didn't know that Jenna would be receiving any extra special awards (other than high GPA) and then she received the department award in history. It made me with we had gone! See that post HERE

This year there was another surprise. She almost didn't want to go to the awards ceremony tonight because she said she was probably just getting the award for high grades, which many students get. But we had a surprise this year also! Her Chinese teacher picked Jenna to receive the award for Chinese! So that was a fun surprise! We also got to see her friends sing the national anthem and she got to take pictures and hang out with her friends after the ceremony, so I think she was glad that I made her come, ha ha!!

Jenna and Claire wore their matching dresses!! (Yes it was planned!)

Clarissa got the award for Language Arts!

Josh, Jr, Grace, Anna, Clarissa, Jenna, Brinkley

Jenna had hung out with friends after the ceremony and it was too dark to take any pictures just of her with her award and so I made her take a couple more the next day before school!

Josh, Soccer Banquet and Awards

Josh had his final soccer banquet and awards ceremony tonight! We got all new coaches this year and they have been awesome! There just seems to be much more positivity and team unity than in the past and that has definitely shown on the field! However I am not thrilled about the proposal this week to have the whole team bleach their hair before the quarter-finals!! 😝😂

Here is a picture of the Varsity Seniors (missing one)

Josh received the Warrior Letter Award, Offensive Player of the Year, and Academic All-State for Soccer! They have started calling Josh "Josh LIGHTNING Jensen." Coach said he was the fastest player that he has ever seen! Here is a picture of Josh with head coach Kendall Nani (who also bleached his hair, but his isn't as noticeable).

Josh, Soccer Senior Night

 Senior Night!!

Tonight was Senior Night! Unfortunately we were playing the most difficult team -- Dixie. Snow Canyon was tied with Dixie for first place in Region going into the game. Sadly we lost -- by one point. If we had won, it would have been a three-way tie with Snow Canyon, Dixie, and Crimson Cliffs for first place. But since we lost Dixie took first, Crimson took second, and Snow Canyon took third. So it was a very disappointing loss -- especially on Senior Night. The boys played well though! Hopefully we get a come-back going into the semi-finals!

Jenna, Awards Night!

Jenna had dance last night and so she skipped out on the middle school awards' night. Come to find out that not only did she get the award for high grades, she was also awarded the departmental award for U.S. History for the 8th grade!! I wish we could have been there to hear her name called and see her get the award! Way to go, Jenna!

Senior Honors Night

Janelle had her Senior Honors Night tonight. She received recognition for receiving scholarships to Dixie State University, Southern Utah University, and Snow College (the three schools she applied to). Janelle, Jaiden, and Ellie Kenworthy sang "Till The Stars Fall From the Sky" as a musical number at the event. They did great! (As soon as Janelle could get the microphone out of the holder, that is!)  😂

Jenna: Student of the Month

Jenna doesn't have the most organized backpack, and so this certificate was pretty battered, but at least she showed it to me so that I could grab a quick picture! This is what it said:

"Mrs. Hafen, Mr. Roberts, and Mrs. Stolen would like to nominate Jenna Jensen as our student of the month in December. Jenna is a great friend and to everyone. She is empathetic and compassionate. She is extremely responsible and a very hard worker. She listens well and is very respectful to both her teachers and her peers. She is a straight A students and always puts her best effort into everything she does. She is always a student that we can count on to do her best and helps others to do their best as well. For these reasons, and many more, Jenna Jensen is our Student of the Month.

Mom's and Muffins and New Beginnings

Wednesday 3:  This morning was “Mom’s and Muffins” at the elementary school. I had a purchased some gluten free muffins to bring for me and Jenna.  It was packed as usual and was fun visiting with some of the other moms.  We had our primary presidency meeting. My first counselor is funny.  She said, “I have an announcement.”  I said, “You had better not be quitting on us!”  She said, “Are you kidding?  I want to be buried next to you ladies!”  I really am grateful for such an awesome presidency – they are SO easy to work with and really on the ball.

There has been drama with our scouts leaders though – clashing personalities and differences of opinions to the point that one lady walked out of the planning meeting last Thursday night and announced that it was over – she was done with scouts!  I wasn’t there, but heard all about it later.  Something similar had happened before and we were able to get things resolved, but now it looks like that is not an option and now we are stuck looking for a new scout leader…sigh!!

I put a pork roast in the oven (see, I actually cooked dinner three nights in a row!  After Rick did so much cooking last week I figured that maybe I should step up to the plate, ha ha!)  I took the three girls to the dentist to get their cavities filled.  The dentist said that Jenna has a severe under-bite and he wants the Orthodontist to look at her teeth now instead of waiting until she is older.  He said that often times they can help these problems easier now while the jaw is still growing.  So I will set up an appointment and see what he says.

Tonight was New Beginnings. They are only receiving two new Beehives this year – Jaiden and Graci Newby. So they were both spotlighted tonight and received wrist corsages.  It was a nice meeting and they sent Jaiden home with a big bouquet of balloons from the decorations (and extra treats) and she was pretty excited about that! She will go into Young Women’s just in time for Girls’ Camp!

Jared: SCMS Warrior Honor Evening

Jared's Awards Night was tonight but Jared didn't want to sit through a long ceremony.  I don't blame him.  They gave him his award the next day for achieving and maintaining a 4.0 GPA all year.  Way to go, Jared!

Reflections

Janelle and Jaiden both entered the Reflections contest this year.  The theme was "Believe, Dream, Inspire."  Janelle drew a picture and wrote a story and Jaiden drew and colored a picture and made up Choreography to the song "Journey to the Past" from Anastasia.  She did a fantastic job putting the choreography together.  It was beautiful!  Janelle won third place in her age group for her story and Jaiden won fourth place.  They both got ribbons.  Great job, girls!!

Janika's Song and Awards Night

Here is the song Janika sang at her NJHS banquet:  "Defying Gravity"

Tonight was the middle school's awards night.  It was a lot nicer than last year, which was held in the gym with many of the students in shorts and T-shirts.  This year they moved it to the High School Auditorium and the dress was semi-formal.  There were nice decorations including a red carpet for the students to enter the auditorium.  The band did a great job with the music!  Janika got an award for the High Honor Roll and also for achieving 100% on the end of level CRT test in Language Arts.

Reflections

Jared, Janelle, and Jaiden all entered the Reflections contest in their elementary school.  This year's theme  theme is "Together We Can."  Jared (fifth grade) put for his title, "Together We Can Make The World a Better Place."  He did a 3D construction out of clay of a clean lake and a dirty lake. Janelle (second grade) had for her title, "Together We Can Read."  She wrote and illustrated a really cute story about a panda bear on his first day of school and how he was so nervous but then ended up loving it. She also entered a drawing under Visual Arts of a teacher with several pupils (all cute animals)!

Jaiden (first grade) drew and colored a picture of Thing One and Thing Two from "The Cat in the Hat."  I am proud of all of them for entering.  Tonight was the Award's night where we got to see everyone's projects.  All of the participants got a bag of candy and prizes.  Both of Janelle's entries won in the top three and so she proudly walked away with two big medals.  Her entries will continue on in the district level.  Way to go kids!

Jaiden wrote: "I like reading The Cat and the Hat" because Thing One and Thing Two are wild and crazy!

Give Me LIberty Award

I am so proud of Jase for taking on the challenge of earning the fifth grade "Give Me Liberty Award." It is quite a challenge. The students who earn the award are required to memorize the following:

The Pledge of Allegiance (written)
The Pledge of Allegiance (in Sign Language)
The Preamble to the Constitution (recited)
The Star Spangled Banner (recited or sung)
The names of our Presidents in the order they served (recited)
The 50 States and their capitals (named and located)
The USA and continents located on the world map
The Gettysburg Address (recited)
A line from the Declaration of Independence (recited)
The Symbols of the United States of America (recited)
The Symbols of the State of Utah (recited)
The Symbols of "Old Glory"

That is a lot of information to remember! Jase learned the names of the US Presidents by listening to the Animaniacs President's Song on the Internet. He had the the whole song down within a couple of days. He was singing it at school and his teacher came and listened and passed him off for the presidents. He said that kids kept coming up and saying, "Sing the song -- I want to hear it!" He even got to sing it for the Principal. He has finished over half of the above list including the States and Capitals. Here is a practice quiz for the US States, now we just need to get going on the Gettysburg Address. Does anyone know a good song for that one?

Janika: Reflections Council Winner!

Janika was one of the council winners for her Reflections song! After winning her local contest, she went on to the next level, which was out of all of the schools in our district (I think). They ended up with three winners overall for her age group in musical composition and she was one of them. Now she goes on to the next level and one of the three will be chosen to go Region (or State?). I am not sure how it works. Way to go Janika!

You can hear the song below!!
